WINNING ESSAY: GRACIE ANDROS, GRADE 4 (MARCH 2011)
I love spring, do you? Spring has a perfect temperature and is beautiful. There are pink and white blossoms on the trees, pink, red and yellow flowers in our garden, and kids in our neighborhood playing everywhere. Spring is a great time for climbing trees and making mud pies. When it is just gently raining my friend and I like to go outside and play in the rain. We also like to look for chipmunks and birds. There are all sorts of games that we play in spring; like pickle, baseball, and tag. I can't wait for spring!!!

WINNING ESSAY: ELLA ZEMENOWSKI, GRADE 4 (FEBRUARY 2011)
There are many amusing winter sports and there are many types of ice skating. Though, the one I am very passionate about is free skating. Free skating is simple and anyone can do it! Just pick up a pair of skates, get on ice and...magic! So many things are entertaining about free skating! Loop, turn, jump, speed, spin, go on one or two feet, front or backwards, whatever works for you. Feel the glide and feel the breeze. It's like a calm ride in a new car with new tires on a freshly paved hill in spring. Feel the chill on your nose turning it bright red like Rudolph's. You know, it is fun! Whether you skate alone or with a friend, free skating is spectacular! What a gigantic amount of fun.

WINNING ESSAY: MADELYN CARNES, GRADE 4 (JANUARY 2011)

Many people like to do many hobbies. I have a few and my favorite is drawing. I especially like to draw pictures for my family. I love to draw puppies, hearts, peace signs, and a lot of other animals. I could draw all day if I wanted to. One day my mom told me I have a talent for drawing, and she also said I put a lot of passion into it. I knew that one day she believed in me and that I could be a great drawer. I and a lot of other people like to draw and I was inspired to draw by some artists. I really hope when I grow up if I become an artist I will inspire other young drawers!

WINNING ESSAY: Halloween Fun by Ryan Le, Grade 4 (OCTOBER 2010)
You can see fake cobwebs on trees, get candy when you go house to house, and see gravestones on front lawns. You can see scarecrows and jack-o-lanterns, witches, and vampires. Halloween is so much fun when you go to houses one-by-one. You can see lots of people in different costumes and you scare them or they scare you. You can get tired from going house-to-house.

Madelyn Carnes, Grade 4 (COLUMBUS DAY 2010)
Columbus Day is a national holiday and that means it is celebrated all over the country. Also, it means all of the banks, schools, and post offices are closed. Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. We celebrate Columbus Day on the second Monday of October. We have parades to celebrate Columbus Day. Also, Christopher’s three ships were called the Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria. Christopher went to America and back four times. He felt like a failure because he didn’t get to the Indies. After he died other people started to go back and forth, and made more discoveries.

Ethan Naylor, Grade 4 (COLUMBUS DAY 2010)
Columbus Day is a national holiday. The reason to celebrate it is because it reminds us of Christopher Columbus when he found America. The three ships he sailed on were the Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria. The day it is celebrated is always the second Monday in October. It is a law to celebrate Columbus Day. Also since it’s a special day, schools, banks and post offices are closed. Finally, Columbus Day isn’t only celebrated by North America but South America and Canada celebrate Columbus Day as well.

NP FAMILIES USE POETRY TO HELP OTHERS

Reminder- copies of the NPS poetry collection entitled "Poetic Minds at Work" are still available for purchase. The price is $10.00 a copy and orders can be forwarded to Miss Quitadamo. Your purchase will support The Hole In the Wall Gang-a program that benefits children with serious diseases- and help spread the "magic" of Nelson Place School.

$2,400 was raised from poetry book sales last spring and this summer a delegation of students, parents and Miss. Quitadamo visited the Hole in the Wall Camp an presented a check. Since the delivery of the check, another $380 has been raised.

Miss Quitadamo was recently contacted by the media specialist at Hole in the Wall Gang. They want to "shine a light on the Nelson Place family", and write an article about the children who have raised money for children. Many kudos to Miss Q and the wonderful families of NP who have supported this effort.
