The Enrichment Committee finds appropriate performers and hosts them at the school. "We try to have a balance of age-appropriate, curriculum-enriching events for all grades and subject areas. In the past, we have enjoyed storytellers, raptors, wild animals, writers, mad scientists, singer/songwriters, actors, historical figures, drummers and guitarists at the school." according to enthusiastic former Committee Chair Allison Hansen.
UPCOMING... 'KRAMER THE K-9', SCIENCE BUG, PUMPERNICKEL PUPPETS & MORE!!
April was an exciting month for Enrichment programs: We enjoyed motivational speaker, Molly Sullivan Sliney, who was very well received by students and teachers alike.
Near the end of April, Kim Bent, "Catch the Science Bug" on PBS visited with four grades levels, grades 1-4, teaching them about where our drinking water comes from.
Enrichment has been busy planning special programs for the late spring, too:
In May, we will have two visits from John Usinas and his assistance dog, "Kramer the K-9." John will meet with grades 1-6 to share his story of becoming blind, show them how his assistance animal helps him, what technology he uses to make life easier, and make the children aware of how to relate respectfully and safely to people with disabilities.
May 20 -- Kim Bent of "Catch the Science Big" on PBS will be spending this time with each Kindergarten class separately to teach them about "Polar Bear Habitats and Other Animal Adaptations."
June 8 -- Pumpernickel Puppets makes its annual visit to Nelson Place for the Kindergarten and Grade 1.
Thanks to everyone for all your help and support this year. Special thanks to the Enrichment Committee: Rita LaPlante, Edna Hyder, Kerry McGrath, Deb Steigman, Peggi Harris. Gretchen Switzer, chair.
ENRICHMENT COMMITTEE PLANS MANY SPRING VISITS
The Nelson Place Enrichment committee has some fantastic programs planned for this spring! These include a motivational speaker who teaches kids how to set goals for themselves and work toward their dreams. She was on the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic fencing team. Molly Sullivan Sliney comes to school on Thursday, April 15 to offer two morning programs - one for K-3 and another for 4-6.
On Tuesday, April 27, Kim Bent brings us her “Catch the Science Bug” program entitled “Where does our Drinking Water come from?” Grades 1- 4 will enjoy this event presented by the woman who has created the “Catch the Science Bug” television program for PBS.
In June, Ms Bent will also be spending time with our individual Kindergarten classes teaching them about “Polar Bears and Other Animal Adaptations.”
“Pumpernickel Puppets” is always a big hit with the K-1 classes. This year they will be coming back on Tuesday, June 8!
We hope you enjoy our upcoming enrichment programs!
