HISTORY

Nelson Place School is located at 35 Nelson Place , off Rt. 122A ( Grove Street ), in the northwest quadrant of Worcester , Massachusetts . It is situated on about 2 acres of land. Nelson Place School opened its doors on September 6, 1927 with eight classrooms and 191 students. For the 2007-2008 school year, the population at Nelson Place School was just under 360 students in grades K-6. Beginning in September of 2008, Nelson Place will welcome morning and afternoon pre-school students as well.

Nelson Place School serves the northwest quadrant of Worcester , Massachusetts .

 

Kindergarten Registration for August 2009 begins in January 2009. Come to the Parent Information Center at 768 Main Steet (Next to Jacob Hiatt School) if your child if your child will be 5 years old by December 31st, 2009. You must bring a birth certificate, proof of immunization and proof of residency.

 

SCHOOL DAY

 

The typical school day at Nelson Place is 9 am - 3:10 pm . In the mornings, children are supervised after 8:45 am in the school yard. If your child does not arrive by school bus, you can drop off and pick up your children outside in the school yard behind the building. During inclement weather, children usually meet in the cafeteria. Always check out back first. Children are tardy after 9:05 am and must report directly to the office.

 

REMINDER: There is no supervision in the school yard before 8:45 am.

 

In light of recent happenings in schools across the nation, the following policies are now in affect at Nelson Place:

  • The main entrance will remain locked at all times.
  • The back door will remain locked until school breakfast begins at 8:45 am.
  • Once the class lines enter the building, all doors will be locked.
  • As in the past, all visitors to the building will have to sign in at the office and wear a visitor's badge.
  • If you are dropping something off for your child or bringing treats for your child's class, we are asking you to leave the items in the office and we will make sure they get to the proper location.

CORI CHECK

 

All individuals wishing to work with the students at the school or chaperone a field trip are required to have a criminal background check. Fill out the form attached and submit to the principal's office via your child's teacher. Please allow four weeks for this check.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

 

Four parents are elected 2 year term to serve on the School Council. The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in items such as: adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards, identifying the educational needs of students attending the school, reviewing the annual school building budget and formulating a school improvement plan.

As openings are available on the council, the principal will send a note hope indicating that interested parties may apply.

KNOW YOUR SCHOOL NIGHT

 

Kindergarten parents will have an open house at the school Tuesday, September 9th. All other grades will have teacher conferences in place of Know Your School Night. More information will be forthcoming.


NELSON PLACE FAMILIES IN NEED

Food and clothing are available to families within our school community. A turkey and groceries will be available for Thanksgiving. Also available are warm coats, jackets, hats and gloves.

If your family needs anything or if you know of any family within our school community that is in need, please contact us at the school by note or telephone. The telephone number is 508-799-3506. Ask for the Principal (Mr. Kelley) or your child's teacher.

SNOW DAYS AND SCHOOL DELAYS

Please listen carefully to the radio and television for school closings and delays due to inclement weather. The following stations make school delays and closing announcements: WTAG 580 AM; WORC 1310 AM; WBZ 1030 AM; WXLO 104.5 FM; WSRS 96.1 FM; WCUV 93.1 FM. You can also find them on channels 4, 5 and 7. They usually have them scrolling at the bottom of the screen. If there is a one or two hour delay, the children should get the bus one or two hours later. At Nelson Place, WE DO NOT DISMISS EARLY DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER.
